Introduction
The 1926 $10 Indian Gold Eagle graded PCGS MS64 CAC is an impressive Choice Mint State example of one of the most celebrated designs in American gold coinage. Certified MS64 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this Philadelphia Mint issue combines high-grade preservation with the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 United States gold. Containing approximately .48375 troy ounces of pure gold, the 1926 Indian Eagle brings together substantial precious metal content, certified quality, and the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define the Renaissance of American Coinage. The Indian Head Eagle remained in production through 1933, although production became increasingly intermittent during the later years of the series.
The Philadelphia Mint struck 1,014,000 Indian Head Eagles in 1926, marking the return of the denomination to Philadelphia for the first time since 1915. The 1926 is one of the more plentiful issues of the series, with many examples surviving in Mint State, and has long been a popular choice for collectors seeking a high-quality representative of the type. At PCGS MS64 with CAC approval, this example offers attractive Choice Mint State preservation and represents an important return to production during the later years of the Indian Head Eagle series.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1926 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' bold interpretation of Liberty marked a dramatic departure from the traditional portraits that had dominated earlier United States gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. With no mintmark present, this 1926 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
