Introduction
The 1936-S Bay Bridge Silver Commemorative Half Dollar in PCGS MS65 is a beautifully preserved example of one of America’s most beloved classic commemoratives. Struck to celebrate the opening of San Francisco’s iconic San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, this coin exhibits excellent luster, sharp detail, and attractive original surfaces. In Gem condition, it is a standout piece for collectors who appreciate both historical significance and high-end eye appeal in classic U.S. silver commemoratives.
History
Issued in 1936, the Bay Bridge Half Dollar commemorates the completion of one of the great engineering achievements of the early 20th century. The bridge opened in November of that year, connecting San Francisco and Oakland across San Francisco Bay during a period of rapid West Coast growth and modernization. Struck exclusively by the San Francisco Mint, this commemorative was produced in limited quantities and sold to the public to support bridge celebrations. Today, the Bay Bridge commemorative stands as a powerful reminder of American ingenuity, progress, and the architectural pride of the New Deal era.
Design
Designed by sculptor Jacques Schnier, the obverse features a striking image of a California grizzly bear, symbolizing strength and the state’s rugged natural heritage. The reverse showcases the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge stretching across the water with a dramatic view of Yerba Buena Island and surrounding scenery. Struck in 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, this coin measures 30.6 mm in diameter and carries a beautifully balanced Art Deco style. This MS65 example displays crisp detail and glowing luster, making it an exceptional specimen of a classic American commemorative series.
