The 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent is one of the most legendary mint errors in American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin displays strong doubling on the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the date “1955.” This doubling occurred due to a misalignment during the die production process, causing a single die to receive two impressions that were out of register. While the Mint eventually discovered the issue, thousands had already entered circulation, and the error became an overnight sensation.
