The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was begun in 1986. After watching millions of Krugerrands, Pandas and Maple Leaf bullion coins being sold by South Africa, China and Canada, the United States entered the fray.
In that inaugural year, the United States Mint was likely unsure of how many of these coins could actually be sold. But they needn’t have worried. These coins were an incredible success. The demand, especially in that first year, was off the charts. Everyone wanted to see, hold, and to especially own these beautiful coins.
The Mint knew that the design that they used, especially on the obverse, would be well-received. The Mint decided to re-use the extremely popular Walking Liberty design. It was created by designer, Adolph Weinman, who depicted Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Her right hand is outstretched in a friendly gesture. Her left arm cradles bundles of olive branches next to her body. She is clothed in flowing robes with an American flag about her shoulders. There is a radiant sun rising behind Miss Liberty, and the word “LIBERTY,” is on the upper periphery. To the right, the motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the open field and on the lower periphery is the date of striking.
The reverse was designed by Chief Engraver John Mercanti who took inspiration from a very early American Silver Dollar design. The eagle wears a shield covering her chest, with arrows and an olive branch in separate talons. There are 13 five-pointed stars arranged above the eagle, and the phrase “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” is on the upper periphery and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” is on the lower periphery.
This coin is a 1986 American Silver Eagle bullion coin, graded as “MS69,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services in the world. It’s grading standards are well-accepted by dealers and collectors everywhere. The ‘MS69,’ grade means that the coin is one or two very minor imperfections short of being perfect. Coins in this grade are highly collectible.
From 1986, the initial year, until 1998, bullion American Silver Eagle coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint, but they do not bear an “S” mintmark.
