1993 1 oz Silver Eagle NGC MS69

This is a 1993 American Silver Eagle bullion coin. It has been graded as ‘MS69’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, third-party grading services in the world today. NGC first authenticates, then grades, and finally, encapsulates coins into their proprietary holders. The grade, ‘MS69’ indicates that this coin is one point from perfection. Coins are graded on a 70 point scale, with 1 being ‘barely identifiable’ to 70 ‘perfect.”  

The obverse of this Silver Eagle depicts Adolph Weinman’s very popular ‘Walking Liberty’ design. This design was used on millions or circulating half dollar coins struck between 1916 and 1947. The US Mint wisely used this design as it was known and popular and would be welcomed now by bullion coin buyers. 

Miss Liberty is shown walking to the viewer’s left across the coin. With her robes flowing and a beautiful sun rising in the background it is a wonderful design. The coin has all of the expected mottoes and phrases that are required to be struck into our coinage.  

The reverse of the coin had a new design, but it was one that could trace its roots back to our earliest coinage. The then-Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, looked at the reverse design of the Draped Bust Dollars struck between 1798 and 1804. Mercanti’s design depicted an American eagle, wings outstretched and upwards, a shield covering its body, arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. He arranged 13 five-pointed stars above the eagle and placed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” above the eagle and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER -  ONE DOLLAR,” below it.
