Introduction
The $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle Certified MS63 (Dates Vary) offers collectors an opportunity to own classic pre-1933 United States gold in Choice Mint State condition. Each coin is professionally certified MS63 and contains approximately .12094 troy ounces of pure gold. With dates and mintmarks varying according to availability, these coins combine precious metal value, Mint State preservation, and the enduring appeal of one of America’s longest-running gold coin designs.
History
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle design was introduced in 1840 and remained in production through 1907, giving Christian Gobrecht’s portrait of Liberty a remarkable 68-year run on the $2.50 denomination. During that time, the series witnessed westward expansion, the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and America’s transformation into an industrial and economic power.
Liberty Head Quarter Eagles were produced at six United States Mint facilities over the course of the series: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Denver. Production at the Southern branch mints ended decades before the series itself, while Denver struck Quarter Eagles only during the final two years of the Liberty Head design. Dates, mintmarks, and individual characteristics vary according to availability. Certified MS63 examples represent the Choice Mint State level, preserving the design without the wear associated with circulation.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround her portrait, with the date positioned below. Gobrecht’s classical depiction of Liberty remained the face of the Quarter Eagle for nearly seven decades, making it one of the most enduring designs in American gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons as symbols of peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2 1/2 D. identify the issuing nation and denomination. Mintmarks, when present, identify the branch mint where the coin was struck, giving individual dates their own place within this long-running American gold series.
