History

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $20 gold coin, resulting in a dramatic departure from the Liberty Head Double Eagle it replaced and a design now regarded as one of the great achievements of American coinage.

Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were struck from 1907 through 1933 at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints, although production varied considerably by year and mint. The final 1933 issue was never released through normal channels, making 1932 the final year represented among regularly issued examples. Large quantities of earlier Double Eagles were later melted following major changes to U.S. gold policy during the 1930s. Certified MS61 examples preserve the design without circulation wear, offering collectors a Mint State example from an era when gold coinage played an important role in banking and international trade.

Design

The obverse features Liberty striding forward while holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, symbols of enlightenment and peace. Rays of the rising sun extend behind her, with the United States Capitol visible in the background. Stars surround the design, while the date appears at lower right. Saint-Gaudens' powerful depiction of Liberty remains one of the most recognizable images in American numismatic art.

The reverse depicts an eagle soaring above the rays of the rising sun, creating a powerful image of strength and freedom. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above the eagle. Depending on the date, the coin may represent the early No Motto type or the later design featuring IN GOD WE TRUST, which was added in 1908.
