Introduction

History
The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 following passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the series gave investors and collectors a convenient way to acquire one troy ounce of silver in a coin guaranteed by the United States government for weight, content, and purity. It quickly became one of the most recognizable modern bullion coin programs in the world.
The United States Mint produced 20,583,000 bullion Silver Eagles dated 2008, reflecting strong demand for physical silver during a year marked by significant financial and economic uncertainty. Unlike the collectible 2008-W burnished Silver Eagle, the standard bullion issue carries no mintmark. Graded NGC MS69, this example sits just one point below the highest grade on the 70-point Sheldon grading scale.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the half dollar in 1916. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag, carrying branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. The inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 2008 complete the obverse.
The reverse features John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design, used on American Silver Eagles from the series' introduction in 1986 through the Type 1 issues of 2021. A bald eagle appears behind a shield while holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons, with a ribbon bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM in its beak and thirteen stars arranged above to represent the original states. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design.
