Introduction
The 2018-W 1 oz American Silver Eagle graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo is a near-perfect proof example from one of the United States Mint's most recognizable modern coin programs. Certified PF69 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this West Point Mint issue displays the strong contrast between frosted design elements and mirrored fields associated with high-quality proof coinage. Containing one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the 2018-W combines precious metal content, exceptional preservation, and the classic American Silver Eagle design introduced in 1986.
History
The American Silver Eagle was introduced in 1986 following passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official silver bullion coin of the United States, the series quickly became popular with both precious metals buyers and collectors. Proof editions are produced specifically for collectors using specially prepared dies and planchets to create highly detailed designs and contrasting surfaces.
The 2018-W Proof Silver Eagle was struck at the West Point Mint and continued the original design combination used since the series debuted in 1986. Its release came during the later years of the original design, before the United States Mint introduced a redesigned reverse in 2021. Graded NGC PF69 Ultra Cameo, this example sits just one point below the highest numerical grade on the 70-point grading scale while displaying the pronounced cameo contrast associated with the Ultra Cameo designation.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's celebrated Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the half dollar in 1916. Liberty strides toward the rising sun while draped in the American flag and carrying branches of laurel and oak. The inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 2018 complete the obverse.
The reverse features John Mercanti's heraldic eagle design, used on American Silver Eagles from the series' introduction in 1986 through the Type 1 issues of 2021. A bald eagle appears behind a shield while holding an olive branch and arrows, with thirteen stars arranged above to represent the original states. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR surround the design. The W mintmark identifies this proof coin as a product of the West Point Mint.
