Introduction
The 2023-P Morgan Silver Dollar certified by CACG with the First Delivery designation brings one of America's most recognizable coin designs into the modern era. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in .999 fine silver, the coin continues the modern Morgan Dollar program introduced in 2021 while preserving the essential design elements of George T. Morgan's historic silver dollar.
History
The original Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 and remained in production through 1904 before returning for a final year in 1921. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, the coin became one of the most widely collected designs in American numismatics.
One hundred years after the original series ended, the U.S. Mint revived the Morgan Dollar in 2021, using historical assets and modern technology to recreate George T. Morgan's classic design. After no Morgan Dollars were issued in 2022, the program returned in 2023 with uncirculated, proof, and reverse proof versions. The 2023 uncirculated Morgan Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in .999 fine silver.
This example carries CACG's First Delivery designation, recognizing its qualification under CACG's requirements for the designation.
Design
The obverse recreates George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY and adorned with agricultural elements. Thirteen stars surround the portrait along with E PLURIBUS UNUM and the date 2023.
The reverse depicts an American bald eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by a wreath. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design.
