Introduction
The 2026 1 oz American Gold Eagle certified by NGC combines one full troy ounce of pure gold with one of the most recognizable designs in American coinage. Struck by the United States Mint in durable 22-karat gold and professionally authenticated and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this certified example offers both precious metal value and collectible appeal. The 2026 issue also marks the 40th anniversary of the American Eagle program, adding another chapter to a bullion series that has become a cornerstone of the modern U.S. precious metals market.
History
The American Gold Eagle debuted in 1986 following passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Created as the official gold bullion coin of the United States, the series is offered in four sizes ranging from one-tenth ounce to one full ounce of gold. Each coin is legal tender, and its weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the United States government, helping the Gold Eagle become one of the world’s leading investment-grade bullion coins.
The 2026 issue celebrates 40 years since the program’s launch. The one-ounce Gold Eagle contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, while small amounts of silver and copper bring the coin to a total weight of 1.0909 troy ounces and provide greater durability than pure 24-karat gold. NGC certification adds independent authentication and grading while preserving the coin securely in a protective holder.
Design
The obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated depiction of Liberty, adapted from his design for the $20 Double Eagle introduced in 1907. Liberty strides forward holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with rays of the sun rising behind her and the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. Beginning in 2021, legacy details from Saint-Gaudens’ original bronze cast were restored to the modern Gold Eagle, bringing the design closer to the artist’s original vision.
The reverse features Jennie Norris’ close-up portrait of a bald eagle, introduced in 2021 and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Renata Gordon. The detailed portrait gives the eagle a striking sense of strength and presence while offering a distinctly modern counterpart to Saint-Gaudens’ historic obverse. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 50 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD complete the design.
