History

In 1986, the United States American Gold Eagle bullion coin program was implemented in order for the United States to compete with the other nations that were offering the marketplace true bullion coins in Troy Ounce increments.
The United States Mint struck 1 Troy Ounce, ½ Troy Ounce, 1.4 Troy Ounce and 1/10^th Troy Ounce bullion coins. The coins were struck in 22 carat gold (.9167 Fine Gold), but each coin contained the actual amount of pure gold.
Design

The obverse of the coins all depicted the famed Augustus Saint-Gaudens design that was used on all US $20 Gold Double Eagle circulation coins, struck between 1907 and 1933. The obverse displays Miss Liberty, facing the viewer, holding aloft a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The rising suns rays dominate the background on the obverse and the US Capitol is depicted in the background.
The reverse originally used artist Miley Busiek’s “Family of Eagles” design up until mid-year 2021, which displays a Father, Mother, and baby eaglet. After a number of 2021-dated coins were struck using Busiek’s design, the reverse design was replaced with a closeup of an American Bald Eagle’s head and beak. This new design was created by Jennie Norris and has been used ever since that time.
The coin is very popular worldwide because of the inspiring design and because they are backed by the full faith and good credit of the United States government. They are important to US collectors and especially to US investors and the coins are eligible for inclusion in Precious Metal IRA accounts.
