Introduction

The $20 Liberty Double Eagle Certified MS64 CAC offers a Choice Mint State example of one of the most important gold denominations in American coinage. Designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck from .900 fine gold and contains 0.9675 troy oz of pure gold. Its MS64 grade reflects a well-preserved uncirculated example, while CAC approval recognizes its quality and eye appeal within the assigned grade. Dates and design types may vary.

History

The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the California Gold Rush. The discovery of enormous quantities of gold created demand for a larger gold denomination, and the $20 Double Eagle provided an efficient way to convert that new supply into federal coinage.
Liberty Head Double Eagles were issued for circulation from 1850 through 1907 and were struck at several U.S. Mint facilities. These large gold coins played an important role in banking, major commercial transactions, and international trade during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The series underwent several design modifications during its long production history. Type I coins were issued without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Type II introduced the motto in 1866, while Type III changed the abbreviated denomination TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS beginning in 1877. The exact date, mint, mintmark, and design type received may vary.

Design

The obverse features James B. Longacre's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait, with the coin's date positioned below.
The reverse centers on a heraldic eagle with a Union shield on its breast, accompanied by elaborate scrollwork and national inscriptions. Specific reverse details vary according to the date and design type represented.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
