Introduction

The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Jewelry (Dates/Types Vary) offers an accessible way to own a substantial piece of classic pre-1933 United States gold coinage. Each coin contains approximately .9675 troy ounces of pure gold and features James B. Longacre's enduring Liberty Head design. Jewelry grade examples may display evidence of previous mounting, polishing, wear, surface marks, or other impairments, but retain their original gold content and historic character. Dates, mintmarks, and design types vary according to availability.

History

The Liberty Head Double Eagle was introduced in 1850 following the discovery of vast quantities of gold in California. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the new $20 denomination provided an efficient way to convert the nation's rapidly expanding gold supply into coinage. Double Eagles became important instruments in banking, large commercial transactions, and international trade throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Liberty Head Double Eagle remained in production through 1907 and was struck at several United States Mint facilities. Over the years, some examples were incorporated into pendants, bezels, and other forms of jewelry because of their substantial gold content and classic design. Coins later removed from these settings may show evidence of mounting or alteration that affects their traditional numismatic grade while preserving their intrinsic gold value and connection to American history.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies surround the portrait, while the date appears below. Longacre's classical design remained the face of America's highest-denomination circulating gold coin for more than half a century.

The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast and outstretched wings, surrounded by inscriptions identifying the United States and the coin's denomination. Several reverse types were used during the series, including the original No Motto design, the later IN GOD WE TRUST type, and the final design with the denomination spelled TWENTY DOLLARS. Specific dates, mintmarks, and design types vary according to availability.
