1900-S $1 Morgan NGC MS63

Introduction

The 1900-S Morgan Silver Dollar graded NGC MS63 is a Choice Mint State example from the San Francisco Mint. Certified MS63 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), this coin retains full Mint State status and represents a turn-of-the-century issue from one of America's most widely collected silver dollar series. With its 90% silver composition, distinctive S mintmark, and classic George T. Morgan design, the 1900-S combines precious metal content, branch-mint history, and numismatic appeal.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase substantial quantities of silver and convert it into silver dollars. Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan created the design for the denomination, beginning a series that would become one of the most recognizable and widely collected in American numismatics.

The San Francisco Mint struck 3,540,000 Morgan Dollars in 1900. Many examples remained in government storage for decades, with bags of Mint State 1900-S dollars eventually distributed by the Treasury from the 1940s through the early 1960s. The 1900-S represents one of the later San Francisco issues from the Morgan Dollar's original 1878–1904 production period. Certified NGC MS63, this example offers Choice Mint State preservation from the closing years of the series' original production run.

Design

The obverse features George T. Morgan's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, reflecting the nation's agricultural heritage. A ribbon in Liberty's hair is inscribed with LIBERTY. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears above, thirteen stars represent the original states, and the date 1900 appears below.

The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath surrounds the eagle, while the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. The S mintmark beneath the wreath identifies this example as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
