Introduction

The 1914 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS65 is an impressive Gem Mint State example of one of the most distinctive designs in American coinage. Certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this well-preserved coin combines the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 U.S. gold with the revolutionary incuse design of sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. With a relatively low Philadelphia mintage and considerably greater scarcity at the Gem level, the 1914 stands as a notable issue within the Indian Head Quarter Eagle series.

History

The Indian Head Quarter Eagle debuted in 1908 during President Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the series broke dramatically with tradition by placing its principal design elements below the coin’s surface rather than raising them in relief. The unusual approach initially generated controversy, including claims that the recessed areas could collect dirt and harbor germs, concerns that ultimately proved unfounded.

The Philadelphia Mint struck 240,000 Quarter Eagles in 1914, giving the issue one of the lower mintages among Philadelphia coins in the series. Production continued in 1915 before the denomination entered a nine-year hiatus, with no Quarter Eagles struck from 1916 through 1924. Although circulated examples of the 1914 survive today, Mint State coins become increasingly challenging at higher grades. A PCGS MS65 represents the issue at the Gem Mint State level, making it a particularly noteworthy survivor of this early production period.

Design

The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered headdress facing left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states, with the date positioned below. Pratt’s incuse technique places the portrait, lettering, stars, and other major design elements below the surrounding field, creating an appearance unlike any earlier regular-issue United States gold coin.

The reverse depicts an eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS complete the design. With no mintmark present, this 1914 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, where all Quarter Eagles of that year were produced.
