Introduction
The 1 oz Gold Royal Mint Queen's Beast (Dates/Designs Vary) combines one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold with designs inspired by centuries of British royal heraldry. Produced by The Royal Mint, each bullion coin in the Queen's Beasts Collection celebrates one of the symbolic creatures associated with the ancestry of Queen Elizabeth II. Combining exceptional gold purity, detailed artistry, and the craftsmanship of one of the world's oldest mints, these coins offer strong appeal for both precious metals investors and collectors.
History
The Queen’s Beasts Collection was inspired by ten heraldic statues created by sculptor James Woodford for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953. Standing approximately six feet tall, the beasts represented different branches of the Queen’s ancestry, drawing on centuries of heraldic tradition and the royal families that shaped the British monarchy.
The Royal Mint introduced The Queen’s Beasts bullion series in 2016 with the Lion of England, followed by the Griffin of Edward III, Red Dragon of Wales, Unicorn of Scotland, Black Bull of Clarence, Falcon of the Plantagenets, Yale of Beaufort, White Lion of Mortimer, White Horse of Hanover, and White Greyhound of Richmond. After all ten individual beasts had been honored, the series concluded with a 2021 Completer Coin bringing the entire collection together in a single design. Dates and individual designs vary according to availability.
Design
The reverse varies by issue and features Jody Clark’s interpretation of one of the ten heraldic beasts associated with the ancestry of Queen Elizabeth II. Each creature appears with a shield bearing heraldic imagery connected to its royal lineage, while intricate background patterns add depth and visual detail to the bullion designs. The Completer Coin differs by bringing all ten beasts together in a single composition surrounding a central portrait of the Queen.
The obverse features Jody Clark’s definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by inscriptions identifying the monarch and denomination. Each 1 oz gold coin contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carries a face value of £100, bringing together modern British bullion, royal symbolism, and centuries of heraldic history.
