Introduction
The $10 Indian Gold Eagle is one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatics. Certified MS64, these classic U.S. gold coins offer collectors a combination of historic significance, artistic distinction, and substantial gold content. Dates and types vary, making each coin a unique opportunity to add an early 20th-century Indian Head Eagle to a collection.
History
The Indian Head $10 Gold Eagle was introduced in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the design, which broke from traditional coinage by using an incuse, or recessed, relief. The series was struck through 1933 at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints and became one of the most recognizable American gold coins of the 20th century.
Indian Head Eagles circulated during a period of major growth and change in the United States, from the Progressive Era through the years surrounding World War I. Today, these historic gold coins are collected for their distinctive design, classic U.S. gold content, and connection to one of the most influential periods in American coinage.
Design
The obverse features Liberty wearing a Native American war bonnet adorned with feathers. The word LIBERTY appears above the portrait, while thirteen stars surround the design and the date is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' innovative incuse technique places the design elements below the surface of the coin, creating the distinctive appearance that defines the Indian Head Eagle series.
The reverse features a naturalistic bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing military preparedness and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN DOLLARS, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Unlike the heraldic eagle found on Liberty Head gold coins, the Indian Head Eagle's standing eagle has no shield and uses a more naturalistic composition.
