History

After watching the worldwide success of the Krugerrand, the Maple Leaf, and the Panda bullion coins, the United States wanted to join the competition and in 1986 it did just that. The United States Mint wanted these coins to be successful in the international marketplace, especially in the United States.

Design

To ensure success, the Mint chose a much revered and honored design for the obverse of the gold coin. They chose the greatly accepted design from the 1907-1933 $20.00 Gold Double Eagle by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

This coin, inspired by then-President Teddy Roosevelt’s vision that wanted to capture the beauty of the classical coins of ancient Greece and Rome, was exactly what Roosevelt wanted. Saint-Gaudens created an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty as a Goddess, staring at the viewer, holding a torch and an olive branch, representing war and peace.

Behind Liberty, a rising sun spreads its rays over the American nation, with Washington DC in the background, as evidenced by the view of the United States Capitol building. The reverse of this new coin needed a new interpretation, so artist Miley Busiek created her “Family of Eagle” motif that encompassed a male eagle returning to the nest carrying an olive branch, the mother and baby eagles in the nest, awaiting his return. Her motif speaks to the American family. Part way through 2021, a new reverse was selected. Created by artist Jennie Norris, it depicts a closeup of an American Bald Eagle’s head, displaying the majesty of our national symbol.

This 1 Troy Ounce, .9167 Fine Gold, .22-carat American Gold Eagle bullion coin, was struck from 1986 to the present date. This listing is from a coin meeting these requirements, but the date is our choice.
