History

The American Gold Eagle bullion coin program created a truly American gold bullion coin for collectors and investors. This One Troy Ounce .22-carat gold coin has been an amazing success.
The design of the obverse was very familiar to many Americans. The United States Mint re-used the 1907 – 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20.00 Gold Double Eagle design of Miss Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch, standing on a rock, with the rays of the sun behind her. In the distance, you can see Washington DC, and the US Capitol Building.
The reverse design was utilized from the 1986 initial minting until halfway through 2021, The design was crafted by sculptor Miley Busiek and was called the “family of eagles” design. But after 35 years, the US Mint decided to change the design and artist Jennie Norris’ closeup of the head of an American Bald Eagle was selected to replace the original design.
Coins dated 2021 may have the original reverse (Type I) or the Jennie Norris new reverse (Type II). Coins dated 2022 or later will all have the new reverse.
American Gold Eagle coins are struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and in Proof methods of manufacture. The coins are all struck in 22 carat (.9167 Fine Gold), the coins weigh slightly over 1 Troy Ounce in order to give the buyer a full troy ounce of pure gold.
These American Gold Eagle bullion coins are some of the most popular One Troy Ounce gold coins worldwide.
