History
The Australian Kangaroo is a very desirable .9999 Fine Gold coin that is especially popular because of the subject matter and the interesting designs that change annually. The coin has always been produced by the Perth Mint.
The series was begun in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget but by 1989 a depiction of a kangaroo replaced the depiction of a gold nugget, and the Kangaroo has remained as the symbol of the coin since that day.
Another reason for the coin series’ popularity is the fact that the images of the kangaroo change annually, making for a very attractive collection of these coins. For unknown reasons outside of the Perth Mint, the Kangaroo designs did not change between 1987 and 1989.
Design
The obverse of these Kangaroo coins always depicts the reigning monarch, so since the series started through 2023, the obverse displayed the approved coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Although Queen Elizabeth II passed in September of 2022, her portrait still graced the obverse of the 2023 Kangaroo coin. King Charles III ascended to the throne in May of 2023 and his portrait will be shown on these coins from 2024 and from that point forward. Surrounding the new monarch are “CHARLES III – AUSTRALIA – 100 DOLLARS.”
The reverse displays an annual version of a Kangaroo, an animal synonymous with Australia and from a staid Kangaroo to jumping Kangaroos to Kangaroos against a rising sun, part of the allure for collectors is the diversity of Kangaroo designs on these coins. The reverse also contains the “P” mintmark for the Perth Mint, the weight, the fineness, the date, and the word “KANGAROO.”
