Introduction

The 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin (Dates Vary) combines one troy ounce of .999 fine gold with one of the most recognizable designs in modern world bullion coinage. Introduced in 1982, the Gold Panda developed an international following among both precious metals investors and collectors through its high gold purity and distinctive panda imagery. With artwork that typically changes from year to year, individual dates offer their own visual identity alongside the intrinsic value of one full troy ounce of gold.

History

China introduced the Gold Panda series in 1982 with gold coins containing one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce of gold. The series quickly distinguished itself from many other bullion programs through detailed artwork and a tradition of introducing a new panda design on most annual releases. The original 1982 coins were issued without face values, with denominations added to the series beginning in 1983.

The traditional one-ounce Gold Panda remained part of the series through 2015. Beginning in 2016, China transitioned the Panda program from traditional troy-ounce measurements to metric weights, replacing the 1 oz coin with a 30 gram gold issue. As a result, the one-ounce Pandas represent the original weight standard used during the first 34 years of the series. Dates, denominations, and individual panda designs vary according to availability.

Design

The obverse features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests within Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, an architectural landmark dating to the Ming dynasty. The Chinese inscription 中华人民共和国, meaning “People’s Republic of China,” appears above the temple, with the year of issue positioned below.

The reverse features China’s giant panda, with the composition changing on most issues from year to year. Depending on the date, designs may portray individual or multiple pandas resting, climbing, eating bamboo, or interacting with one another. Denominations and other inscriptions vary by year, while the changing panda artwork gives individual issues their own identity within one of the world’s longest-running modern gold bullion series.
