History
The Draped Bust Gold Eagle was first introduced in 1795 following the establishment of the United States Mint under the Coinage Act of 1792. Designed by Robert Scot, the $10 Eagle served as the nation's highest-denomination circulating coin and reflected the young republic's growing economic strength. Production of these early gold coins was limited, and surviving examples are among the most desirable treasures in American numismatics.
The 1799 issue includes several important die varieties, with the Small Stars variety recognized as one of the most collectible. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the nation's only minting facility at the time, these coins saw extensive commercial use, leaving very few survivors in Mint State. A PCGS MS64 CAC example ranks among the elite known specimens, exhibiting remarkable luster, sharply defined details, and exceptional originality more than two centuries after it was struck.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing right with flowing hair tied by a ribbon, surrounded by thirteen small stars representing the original states. The date appears below, while Robert Scot's elegant Draped Bust portrait became one of the defining images of early American coinage. The Small Stars variety is distinguished by the reduced size of the stars surrounding Liberty, a feature closely studied and highly sought after by specialists.
The reverse displays the Small Eagle design, depicting a naturalistic bald eagle perched upon a cloud and surrounded by a wreath. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination complete this historic composition. Used only during the earliest years of the Eagle series before the adoption of the Heraldic Eagle reverse, the Small Eagle design remains one of the rarest and most admired motifs in United States coinage.
