The 1804 Draped Bust Half Eagle with the Small 8 over Large 8 variety is a captivating relic of early American coinage and a prime example of how the U.S. Mint adapted its dies during this formative era. This particular piece is certified MS62 by NGC, offering strong technical quality, lustrous surfaces, and a notable place in numismatic history. Coins of this type rarely survive in Mint State, especially those exhibiting this prominent overdate.

On the obverse, Liberty faces right with flowing hair bound by a ribbon, surrounded by thirteen stars and the inscription LIBERTY above. The date 1804 is placed at the base, with the final digit showing clear evidence of repunching. The Small 8 over Large 8 variety is the result of an earlier die with a large 8 being recut with a smaller punch, leaving behind a bold and visible diagnostic that collectors actively seek. The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, clutching arrows and an olive branch, and surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

The Draped Bust Half Eagle was struck from 1795 to 1807, and each year’s mintage was limited by the Mint’s modest early output. The 1804 issue saw just 14,775 coins produced, and examples with this overdate are significantly scarcer. In MS62, this coin offers full cartwheel luster, a sharp strike, and just a few scattered marks consistent with the grade. The coin is housed in an NGC holder, adding confidence and protection for long-term preservation.
