Introduction
The 1854 $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a classic pre-1933 United States gold coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Designed by U.S. Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle features a neoclassical portrait of Liberty and represents an important period in 19th-century American gold coinage. This 1854 example is graded NGC MS64, representing a Choice Uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation and strong overall preservation.
History
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle debuted in 1840, replacing the earlier Classic Head design. The series remained in production through 1907, spanning the California Gold Rush, the Civil War, and decades of American economic expansion. With a denomination of $2.50, the Quarter Eagle was among the smaller gold coins issued by the United States Mint during the 19th century.
In 1854, the Philadelphia Mint struck 596,258 Liberty Head Quarter Eagles. Although the issue had a substantial original mintage and remains relatively accessible in circulated grades, well-preserved Mint State examples are more challenging to obtain. Graded NGC MS64, this example represents a high-quality survivor from the early decades of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series.
Design
The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is gathered into a bun, while thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait. The date 1854 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast. The eagle holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the design and the denomination 2 1/2 D. appears below. Unlike larger Liberty Head gold denominations, the Quarter Eagle never incorporated the motto IN GOD WE TRUST during its original production run.
