I could not find a way to use e-check on checkout so I will have to mail a check. My bank charges to much for a wire transfer.
Introduction
The 1869-S $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle NGC MS61 CAC represents a remarkable survivor from the pre-1870s San Francisco Mint gold issues. Struck in .900 fine gold and verified by CAC for quality within its grade, this coin reflects both the craftsmanship and resilience of early U.S. coinage. With its sharp detail and original mint luster, this MS61 example offers collectors an opportunity to own a scarce and historically rich piece of America’s gold legacy.
History
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series, designed by Christian Gobrecht, was introduced in 1840 and continued production until 1907. The 1869-S issue holds particular importance as one of the earlier San Francisco Mint Quarter Eagles, struck during a time when the West Coast played a vital role in supplying gold to the nation’s economy.
Mintages at San Francisco in this era were relatively low, and many coins saw heavy circulation in commerce, making Mint State survivors exceptionally rare. The 1869-S is a challenging date in all uncirculated grades, and the CAC endorsement confirms this coin’s premium eye appeal and originality.
Design
The obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word *LIBERTY*, surrounded by thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, with the date 1869 below. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast, clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the inscriptions *UNITED STATES OF AMERICA* and *2½ D.*
Christian Gobrecht’s design balances strength and grace, embodying the ideals of a young nation expanding westward. The 1869-S $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle in MS61 CAC condition displays frosty luster and well-struck design elements, a true testament to the skill of 19th-century U.S. Mint engravers.
