Introduction

The 1876-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents a commanding example of late nineteenth-century American gold coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this Double Eagle circulated during a period of western expansion, industrial growth, and expanding global trade. Graded PCGS AU53, it retains strong detail and original character, offering collectors a substantial and historic gold issue from one of America’s most important minting facilities.

History

By 1876, the San Francisco Mint had become central to the nation’s gold coin production, converting western-mined bullion into circulating currency and export coinage. Double Eagles were widely used in banking, large commercial transactions, and international settlements. Many examples entered global commerce and saw extended circulation, making surviving About Uncirculated specimens increasingly desirable. The 1876-S issue stands as a tangible artifact of America’s financial strength during the post–Gold Rush era and the nation’s centennial year.

Design

Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch beneath the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS frame the design, completing a bold composition that defined the Liberty Head Double Eagle series for decades.
