Introduction
The 1878 $3 Gold Piece is one of the most desirable examples of the celebrated Three Dollar Gold series. Certified by NGC as MS65 and approved by CAC, this gem-quality coin displays full mint luster, sharp strike detail, and immaculate surfaces that exemplify the artistry of 19th-century American gold coinage. With its combination of condition rarity, historical importance, and CAC endorsement, this piece represents one of the finest quality survivors of its type available to collectors and investors today.
History
The $3 Gold denomination was authorized under the Act of February 21, 1853, and first struck in 1854. Conceived to simplify the purchase of full sheets of 3-cent postage stamps, the coin saw little commercial use and was produced in modest numbers. By 1878, mintage levels were extremely limited, with just 82,304 business strikes produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
The 1878 issue marks one of the final high-mintage years before production sharply declined, making it among the more accessible yet still highly collectible dates in the series. Surviving examples in Gem Mint State are exceptionally scarce, as most $3 Gold pieces were either circulated or melted during later gold recalls. The MS65 CAC specimen offered here represents the pinnacle of preservation and quality for this historic type.
Design
Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the $3 Gold Piece features one of the most elegant designs in U.S. numismatic history. The obverse presents the Indian Princess portrait of Liberty, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY—a symbol of strength and unity. The reverse displays a beautifully detailed agricultural wreath composed of corn, cotton, wheat, and tobacco, encircling the denomination and date.
In this MS65 CAC-certified example, the design elements are rendered with exceptional clarity, complemented by radiant golden luster and pristine surfaces. The coin’s aesthetic balance and superior preservation make it an outstanding representation of 19th-century U.S. gold engraving and a cornerstone of any advanced collection.
