Introduction
The 1884-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic issues in the Morgan Dollar series, combining the prestige of the Carson City Mint with outstanding Mint State preservation. Graded PCGS MS66, this premium Gem example features strong cartwheel luster, sharp strike detail, and excellent eye appeal. Carson City Morgan Dollars remain among the most sought-after coins in American numismatics due to their historic Western origins and limited production.
History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated large-scale silver purchases by the United States government. The Carson City Mint, located near Nevada’s famous Comstock Lode, struck silver dollars using silver sourced from one of the richest mining regions in American history. Compared to larger mints such as Philadelphia and New Orleans, Carson City production was relatively limited, contributing to the enduring scarcity and popularity of CC-mintmarked Morgan Dollars. The 1884-CC issue remains especially desirable due to its strong collector demand and connection to the American frontier.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, symbolizing American agricultural prosperity. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, while the date appears below. Above Liberty is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin introduced a more natural and distinctly American interpretation of Liberty compared to earlier classical depictions.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle. The CC mintmark beneath the wreath identifies the coin as a product of the legendary Carson City Mint.
