Introduction
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful gold coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, the series combines exceptional artistry with nearly one troy ounce of pure gold. This example is graded MS65, representing a Gem Uncirculated coin with no wear from circulation and attractive overall preservation. Dates and mintmarks vary based on availability.
History
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907, replacing the Liberty Head Double Eagle as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's initiative to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. The earliest 1907 issues included the celebrated High Relief design, but production challenges led the U.S. Mint to adopt a lower-relief version better suited for regular coinage.
Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were struck from 1907 through 1916 and again from 1920 through 1933 at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. Early issues were produced without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which was added to the reverse in 1908 following congressional action. The number of stars on the obverse increased from 46 to 48 in 1912 following the admission of New Mexico and Arizona to the Union.
Although originally intended for monetary use, many Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were held in bank reserves or used in international transactions. Following the restrictions on private gold ownership introduced in 1933, large quantities of U.S. gold coins were melted. Surviving examples remain an important part of American numismatic history, with Gem Uncirculated coins particularly appealing to collectors seeking well-preserved pre-1933 gold.
Design
The obverse features a full-length figure of Liberty advancing forward, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Rays of the rising sun extend behind her, with the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. LIBERTY appears above, surrounded by stars representing the states of the Union, while the date appears at lower right.
The reverse depicts a majestic eagle in flight above rays of the rising sun. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above the eagle, while With Motto issues also feature IN GOD WE TRUST. The edge bears the raised lettering E PLURIBUS UNUM, a distinctive feature of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design.
