History
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 following passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which restored production of the standard silver dollar. Designed by U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan, the series became one of the most recognizable forms of American silver coinage.
In 1884, the Philadelphia Mint produced 14,070,000 Morgan Dollars for circulation. Philadelphia issues carry no mintmark, distinguishing them from Morgan Dollars struck at branch mints during the same period.
Graded MS63 by PCGS, this example shows no wear from circulation and retains the Mint State characteristics associated with the grade.
Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a cap and crown inscribed with LIBERTY. The inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date 1884 surround the portrait.
The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by a wreath. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
