Introduction

The 1893-S Morgan Silver Dollar is widely recognized as the key date of the entire Morgan Dollar series. Graded NGC XF40, this highly collectible example offers strong detail and exceptional historical significance. With the lowest business-strike mintage of any Morgan Dollar, the 1893-S has become a cornerstone acquisition for serious collectors seeking one of the most important silver coins in American numismatics.

History

Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the 1893-S Morgan Dollar had a remarkably low mintage of just 100,000 pieces, the smallest regular-issue production figure in the series. Many examples entered circulation during a period of economic uncertainty following the Panic of 1893, leaving few survivors in collectible condition. As collectors assembled Morgan Dollar sets throughout the 20th century, demand for the elusive 1893-S continued to grow. Today, it stands as one of the most famous key-date coins in U.S. coin collecting and remains essential for completing a Morgan Dollar collection.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, symbolizing American agricultural prosperity. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, while the date appears below. Above Liberty is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designed by George T. Morgan, the portrait remains one of the most recognizable images in American coinage.
The reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch, representing strength and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle. The "S" mintmark below the wreath identifies the coin as a product of the historic San Francisco Mint.
