History
The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht and introduced in 1840. The design remained in production through 1907, making it one of the longest-running gold coin designs in United States history. With a face value of $2.50 and nearly one-eighth of a troy ounce of pure gold, Quarter Eagles served as circulating currency, while proof examples were produced in extremely limited quantities for collectors.
In 1901, the Philadelphia Mint produced 91,100 business-strike Quarter Eagles but only 223 proofs. Although this was the highest proof mintage of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle series, surviving examples remain scarce, particularly at advanced grades. Proof coins were specially produced with greater attention to surface preparation and striking quality than coins intended for circulation. Graded PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo and approved by CAC, this example represents an exceptionally well-preserved survivor from that limited production.
Design
The obverse features Christian Gobrecht's left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Her hair is gathered at the back of her head, while thirteen stars representing the original states surround the portrait. The date 1901 appears below.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a Union shield across its breast. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other, symbolizing the nation's preference for peace and readiness for defense. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the eagle, while the denomination 2 1/2 D. appears below. On this Deep Cameo proof, the frosted portrait, lettering, and eagle contrast sharply against highly reflective fields, emphasizing the details of Gobrecht's design.
