Introduction
The 1901-S $10 Liberty Head Eagle represents late-era classic U.S. gold coinage struck at the renowned San Francisco Mint. Issued at a time when gold still circulated in meaningful commercial quantities, this coin reflects both economic strength and refined minting quality. Graded PCGS MS64 and approved by CAC, this example offers a compelling combination of condition, originality, and market confidence.
History
The Liberty Head Eagle series was produced from 1838 through 1907 and served as one of the backbone denominations of American gold commerce. By 1901, the San Francisco Mint had established itself as a leading producer of gold coinage, supported by abundant Western gold supplies and advanced minting operations.
Coins dated 1901-S circulated during a period of rapid industrial growth and expanding international trade at the turn of the 20th century. While many examples entered circulation or were later melted, high-grade survivors with CAC approval are notably scarce, enhancing their desirability among both type and date collectors.
Design
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with Liberty. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the portrait, with the date positioned below. The design is a hallmark of 19th-century American neoclassical coinage, emphasizing balance and dignity.
The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch to symbolize national strength and peace. The inscriptions United States of America and Ten D. frame the design, with the S mintmark clearly visible beneath the eagle. In MS64 condition, this coin displays strong strike detail, vibrant mint luster, and attractive surfaces, all affirmed by CAC as solid for the grade.
