Introduction
The 1906 $2.50 Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle NGC PR66 Cameo CAC stands as a magnificent example of early 20th-century proof gold craftsmanship. Featuring deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements, this coin displays a striking cameo contrast that captures the artistry and precision of the Philadelphia Mint. With its exceptional eye appeal, premium CAC approval, and near-pristine Proof 66 grade, this piece represents the pinnacle of pre-1933 numismatic excellence.
History
Designed by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1840 and remained in production until 1907. By 1906, proof gold coinage had become both a technical and artistic triumph for the U.S. Mint. Only 176 Proof Quarter Eagles were struck that year, each hand-polished and carefully inspected to ensure mirror-like surfaces and crisp detail.
The 1906 issue is especially significant as one of the final years of the Liberty Head series before the introduction of Bela Lyon Pratt’s incuse Indian Head design in 1908. Surviving examples in PR66 Cameo condition are exceedingly rare, and CAC approval further confirms its outstanding quality and originality.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, adorned with a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY", surrounded by thirteen stars symbolizing the original colonies, with the date 1906 below. The reverse depicts a stately heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and 2½ D.
In this proof striking, the contrast between Liberty’s frosted portrait and the coin’s deeply mirrored fields exemplifies the Mint’s mastery of cameo proof production. The result is a coin that shines with elegance, depth, and timeless beauty — a fitting tribute to America’s golden age of coin design.
