The 1907 $10 Indian Head Eagle Wire Rim is one of the most important coins in American numismatic history. It represents the beginning of President Theodore Roosevelt's bold initiative to transform American coinage into true works of art. This piece is the original version of the Indian Head Eagle, designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and it is considered one of the most artistically influential coins ever produced by the United States Mint. Graded MS65 by CACG, this example stands as a superb representation of a rare and iconic issue.

The obverse of the coin features Liberty in a left-facing portrait, wearing a Native American war bonnet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her are thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The date 1907 appears at the bottom of the design. This highly original depiction of Liberty was the result of Roosevelt’s request to depart from traditional and uninspired designs. He wanted American coinage to reflect the artistic greatness of ancient Greece and Rome, and this coin was one of the first steps in that ambitious vision.

The reverse of the coin shows a stately eagle standing on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and TEN DOLLARS encircle the design. One of the most notable features of the 1907 Wire Rim issue is the absence of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which was not included on the original design due to Saint-Gaudens’ and Roosevelt’s preference for artistic simplicity. Public objection later led to its addition in subsequent issues.

The term "Wire Rim" refers to the sharp fin-like rim around the coin, caused by the striking method used during its production. These coins were struck with unusually high relief, which required more than one blow from the press. The process often caused metal to flow outward at the edges, creating the raised rim that defines this variety. Only a limited number of these coins were ever struck, mostly intended for dignitaries, collectors, and officials. They were never released for circulation and are considered pattern coins by many experts, although they are often collected as part of the regular series.

This particular coin has been graded MS65 by CACG, meaning it is in gem uncirculated condition with strong luster, sharp detail, and only minimal contact marks visible under magnification. CACG certification also provides the added assurance that the coin meets strict quality standards within the assigned grade. Coins at this level of preservation are rare, especially for an issue as significant as the 1907 Wire Rim. Fewer than 500 examples are believed to exist across all grades, and only a small number have received gem-level grades.

The 1907 $10 Indian Wire Rim is much more than just a rare gold coin. It is the first realization of Roosevelt’s vision to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. It also represents one of Saint-Gaudens’ final masterpieces, as he passed away shortly after completing the designs for the eagle and the famous double eagle. As such, this coin holds deep significance for collectors who appreciate the intersection of art, history, and politics in numismatics.

For advanced collectors, this coin offers the opportunity to own an American classic in a condition that very few examples achieve. Its unique design, limited mintage, and historical importance ensure its place as a centerpiece in any premier collection. Whether acquired for its beauty, rarity, or its role in the Renaissance of American coinage, the 1907 $10 Indian Wire Rim remains one of the most celebrated numismatic achievements of the twentieth century.
