Introduction
The 1908 $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle With Motto is a significant early issue in the acclaimed Indian Head gold series designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Graded PCGS MS64 with CAC approval, this example offers strong Mint State preservation, original surfaces, and excellent visual appeal. As one of the earliest “With Motto” examples, it represents an important transition in U.S. gold coin design and remains highly desirable among advanced collectors.
History
The Indian Head Eagle series was introduced in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s ambitious effort to elevate American coinage to artistic prominence. The original 1907 issues were struck without the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” but public criticism led to its reintroduction in 1908. The 1908 With Motto issue marks this design correction and became the standard going forward. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, surviving examples in higher Mint State grades with CAC approval are increasingly sought after due to their quality confirmation and historical importance within the early 20th-century gold series.
Design
Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the obverse features a striking left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress, with 13 stars surrounding the design and the date placed at the bottom. The reverse depicts a majestic standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears next to the eagle, distinguishing it from the original 1907 issue.
