Introduction
The 1909-S $10 Indian Gold Eagle graded PCGS MS63 CAC is a Choice Mint State example of a scarce San Francisco issue from one of America's most celebrated gold coin series. Certified MS63 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), this coin combines attractive preservation with the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 United States gold. Containing approximately .48375 troy ounces of pure gold, the 1909-S brings together numismatic scarcity, branch-mint history, and the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
History
The Indian Head Eagle debuted in 1907 during President Theodore Roosevelt's campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt commissioned renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign the nation's $10 and $20 gold coins, resulting in two dramatically different designs that helped define the Renaissance of American Coinage. The Indian Head Eagle remained in production through 1933, although coins were not struck in every year.
The San Francisco Mint struck 292,350 Indian Head Eagles in 1909. Despite that relatively substantial mintage, the 1909-S is considerably scarcer in Mint State than the original production figure might suggest. A small group of Mint State examples recovered from European holdings in the late twentieth century improved availability, although most were in lower uncirculated grades. At PCGS MS63 with CAC approval, this example represents a desirable Choice Mint State survivor with an additional assessment of quality within the assigned grade.
Design
The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed with LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original states appear above the portrait, while the date 1909 is positioned below. Saint-Gaudens' bold interpretation of Liberty marked a dramatic departure from the traditional portraits that had dominated earlier United States gold coinage.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TEN DOLLARS complete the design. The S mintmark identifies this example as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
