Introduction
The 1910-S $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle is one of the most iconic and artistically ambitious gold coins produced by the United States Mint. Graded NGC MS62, this San Francisco issue offers strong detail, original mint character, and the distinctive incuse design that defines the Indian Head Eagle series. Combining historic significance with bold early 20th century artistry, the 1910-S remains a desirable addition to advanced gold collections.
History
The Indian Head Eagle series was introduced in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to transform the appearance of American coinage. Designed by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the series departed dramatically from traditional raised-relief coinage by incorporating recessed, or incuse, design elements. The 1910-S issue was struck at the San Francisco Mint during a period of expanding commerce and economic growth in the American West. Many examples entered circulation, making Mint State survivors increasingly scarce and collectible today.
Design
The obverse features Liberty wearing a Native American war bonnet adorned with feathers, with LIBERTY positioned above and the date below. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies. Saint-Gaudens’ innovative incuse style gives the coin a sculptural and highly distinctive appearance unlike any previous United States gold issue.
The reverse displays a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbolizing military readiness and peace. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN DOLLARS, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The recessed reverse design complements the obverse and reinforces the bold artistic identity of the series.
