Introduction

History

The Indian Head Half Eagle debuted in 1908 as part of a broader transformation of American gold coinage during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. Bela Lyon Pratt created the $5 Half Eagle and $2.50 Quarter Eagle designs, introducing an unusual recessed format that distinguished the coins from traditional raised-relief U.S. coinage.

The San Francisco Mint struck 770,200 Indian Head Half Eagles in 1910. While the original mintage was substantial, surviving examples become considerably more challenging in higher Mint State grades. The 1910-S is also associated with varying mintmark definition, a characteristic encountered on several San Francisco issues in the Indian Head Half Eagle series.

Design

The obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress. LIBERTY appears above the portrait, thirteen stars representing the original states surround the design, and the date 1910 appears below. The recessed design places the principal elements below the surrounding surface rather than raising them above the field.

The reverse depicts a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears above, with E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS incorporated into the design. The S mintmark identifies this coin as a product of the San Francisco Mint.
