Introduction
The 1911-S $5 Indian Head Half Eagle is a highly regarded early 20th-century U.S. gold coin and a strong example of Bela Lyon Pratt’s incuse design innovation. Graded PCGS MS63 with CAC approval, this piece reflects solid Mint State preservation, original surfaces, and strong collector appeal. As a San Francisco Mint issue from the early Indian Head gold series, it remains a key date within one of the most distinctive designs in American coinage.
History
The Indian Head Half Eagle series was introduced in 1908 as part of a major redesign of U.S. gold coinage, breaking from traditional raised-relief designs in favor of an incuse technique where the design is sunken into the surface. By 1911, production at the San Francisco Mint was limited compared to Philadelphia and Denver, contributing to lower survivorship in higher grades. The CAC endorsement on this example confirms strong quality for the assigned grade, adding further desirability among advanced collectors of early 20th-century gold.
Design
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, the obverse features a left-facing Native American portrait wearing a feathered headdress, with LIBERTY inscribed along the upper rim and 13 stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a standing eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both military readiness and peace.
