Introduction
The 1912 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle graded PCGS MS64 is an impressive Choice Mint State example of one of the most distinctive designs in American coinage. Certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this coin combines the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 U.S. gold with the revolutionary incuse design of sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. Preserved at the MS64 level more than a century after it was struck, the 1912 offers an appealing example of this unmistakable early twentieth-century gold series.
History
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle debuted in 1908 during President Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the series broke dramatically with tradition by placing its principal design elements below the coin’s surface rather than raising them in relief. The unusual approach initially generated controversy, including claims that the recessed areas could collect dirt and harbor germs, concerns that ultimately proved unfounded.
The Philadelphia Mint struck 616,000 Quarter Eagles in 1912. While the date is relatively available compared with some of the scarcer issues in the series, examples become increasingly challenging at higher Mint State grades. Certified PCGS MS64, this coin represents the Choice Mint State level, preserving Pratt’s distinctive design without the wear associated with circulation and offering collectors a high-grade example of classic American gold.
Design
The obverse features a Native American wearing a feathered headdress facing left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states, with the date positioned below. Pratt’s incuse technique places the portrait, lettering, stars, and other major design elements below the surrounding field, creating an appearance unlike any earlier regular-issue United States gold coin.
The reverse depicts an eagle standing upon a bundle of arrows wrapped with an olive branch, symbols of military preparedness and peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2 1/2 DOLLARS complete the design. With no mintmark present, this 1912 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, where all Quarter Eagles of that year were produced.
