Introduction
The 1915-S Panama-Pacific $2.50 Gold Commemorative is one of the most iconic classic commemorative coins issued by the United States Mint. Struck for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco, this historic gold issue celebrates both the completion of the Panama Canal and the city’s remarkable recovery following the devastating 1906 earthquake. Graded NGC AU55, this example retains strong detail and attractive original character, offering collectors an appealing connection to one of America’s grandest world fairs.
History
The Panama-Pacific International Exposition opened in 1915 as a global celebration of innovation, trade, engineering, and American progress. Held in San Francisco, the event commemorated the completion of the Panama Canal, which transformed global commerce by linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. To mark the occasion, the United States Mint produced a special series of commemorative coins, including the $2.50 gold Quarter Eagle. These coins were sold to exposition attendees and collectors, though many remained unsold, contributing to the scarcity and desirability of surviving examples today.
Design
The obverse features Columbia riding atop a hippocampus, a mythical sea creature associated with Neptune, symbolizing America’s maritime strength and connection between oceans through the Panama Canal. The inscription PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPOSITION surrounds the design, while the year appears below.
The reverse displays an eagle perched confidently on a Union shield, representing national strength and stability. Surrounding inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination below. Designed by Charles E. Barber, the coin blends classical symbolism with bold early 20th century American artistry.
