Introduction
The 1922 Grant Memorial Half Dollar No Star graded NGC MS67 CAC is a superb example of an early United States commemorative silver coin. Issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ulysses S. Grant, the coin features a distinctive design by noted sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser. Certified MS67 by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and approved by CAC, this example combines exceptional Mint State preservation with the history and artistry of America's classic commemorative coinage.
History
Congress authorized the Grant Memorial Half Dollar in 1922 to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who became the 18th President of the United States. Proceeds from the commemorative program were intended to help fund memorial buildings and a highway near Grant's birthplace in Point Pleasant, Ohio.
The Philadelphia Mint produced two varieties of the Grant Memorial Half Dollar, one with a star in the obverse field and the more common No Star variety. Approximately 67,350 No Star examples were ultimately distributed after unsold coins were returned for melting. The issue was produced for only one year, making it part of the classic era of United States commemorative coinage. At the MS67 level, surviving examples are notable for their exceptional preservation and overall quality.
Design
The obverse, designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, features a right-facing portrait of Ulysses S. Grant in military uniform. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, ULYSSES S. GRANT, and the centennial dates 1822-1922 surround the portrait. Unlike the scarcer companion variety, this version does not include a star in the field above Grant's name.
The reverse depicts Grant's birthplace in Point Pleasant, Ohio, surrounded by trees and a split-rail fence. The mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM appear above and beside the scene. Fraser's detailed architectural composition gives the coin a distinctly historical character while connecting the commemorative directly to Grant's origins.
