Introduction

The 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar stands as one of the most admired U.S. silver coins ever struck. As the first proof issue of the series, this piece represents both beauty and historical significance. Certified PR65 by PCGS and verified by CAC for superior quality, this example exhibits exceptional eye appeal with mirrored surfaces and sharp detail. Collectors prize 1936 proofs as the inaugural issue of modern proof coinage after a long hiatus from 1916 to 1935.

History

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced in 1916, designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman as part of the U.S. Mint’s early 20th-century coinage renaissance. Its graceful depiction of Liberty walking toward the rising sun symbolized national optimism during an era of great change.

Proof production for the series began in 1936, following a two-decade pause in proof coinage. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 3,901 proof halves that year, all sold directly to collectors. Because of the low mintage and delicate finish, high-quality survivors are rare and highly desirable.

The 1936 issue marks the rebirth of U.S. proof coinage and serves as a cornerstone for collectors of both classic proofs and the iconic Walking Liberty design, which later inspired the modern American Silver Eagle.

Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty striding toward the dawn of a new day, draped in the American flag and carrying laurel and oak branches representing civil and military glory. The word LIBERTY arches around the rim, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1936 appear below.

The reverse depicts a majestic bald eagle perched confidently on a mountain crag, wings partially unfolded in a symbol of strength and freedom. A small sapling of mountain pine grows from the rock, reflecting America’s resilience and renewal.

This PCGS PR65 CAC example displays deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements that highlight Weinman’s artistry. CAC verification underscores its exceptional quality and originality among early proof issues.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
