Introduction

History
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was introduced in 1916, designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman as part of the U.S. Mintās early 20th-century coinage renaissance. Its graceful depiction of Liberty walking toward the rising sun symbolized national optimism during an era of great change.
Proof production for the series began in 1936, following a two-decade pause in proof coinage. The Philadelphia Mint struck only 3,901 proof halves that year, all sold directly to collectors. Because of the low mintage and delicate finish, high-quality survivors are rare and highly desirable.
The 1936 issue marks the rebirth of U.S. proof coinage and serves as a cornerstone for collectors of both classic proofs and the iconic Walking Liberty design, which later inspired the modern American Silver Eagle.
Design
The obverse features Lady Liberty striding toward the dawn of a new day, draped in the American flag and carrying laurel and oak branches representing civil and military glory. The word LIBERTY arches around the rim, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1936 appear below.
The reverse depicts a majestic bald eagle perched confidently on a mountain crag, wings partially unfolded in a symbol of strength and freedom. A small sapling of mountain pine grows from the rock, reflecting Americaās resilience and renewal.
