The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a Union shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows as symbols of peace and military preparedness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 2 1/2 D. complete the design, while mintmarks, when present, identify the branch mint where the coin was struck.
