History

The Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was introduced in 1840 and remained in production through 1907. This gave the design one of the longest continuous runs in U.S. coinage. Created by U.S. Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht, the design replaced the earlier Classic Head Quarter Eagle and remained largely unchanged throughout its production span.

Liberty Head Quarter Eagles were struck at the Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints. The long-running series spans several important periods in American history, including the California Gold Rush and the Civil War era.

Design

The obverse features Liberty facing left and wearing a coronet inscribed with LIBERTY. Her portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original states. The date appears below.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination 2 1/2 D. Branch-mint issues carry a mintmark beneath the eagle, while Philadelphia issues have no mintmark.
