Introduction
The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle MS63 CAC (Dates Vary) combines nearly one full troy ounce of gold with one of the most celebrated designs in American coinage. Certified in Choice Mint State and approved by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), each coin offers professionally recognized quality along with the historic appeal of classic pre-1933 U.S. gold. With dates and mintmarks varying according to availability, these coins bring together substantial precious metal content, remarkable artistry, and more than a century of American numismatic history.
History
The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle debuted in 1907 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to elevate the artistic quality of American coinage. Roosevelt turned to renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, whose ambitious design transformed the nation’s $20 gold coin with imagery inspired in part by the high-relief coinage of ancient Greece. Although the original high-relief format proved impractical for mass production, a modified version became one of the defining designs of American gold coinage.
Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were struck from 1907 through 1916 and again from 1920 through 1933, with production taking place at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco depending on the year. Although millions were originally produced, large quantities were later melted following major changes to U.S. gold policy during the 1930s. Many surviving examples returned to the United States decades later after being preserved in overseas bank vaults. Today, MS63 CAC examples offer Choice Mint State preservation within one of the most widely collected classic U.S. gold series.
Design
The obverse features Liberty striding forward while holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, symbols of enlightenment and peace. Rays of the rising sun appear behind her, with the U.S. Capitol visible in the background. The number of stars surrounding Liberty varies by date, with 46 stars on issues through 1911 and 48 beginning in 1912 following the admission of New Mexico and Arizona. The date and mintmark, when present, appear near the lower portion of the design.
The reverse depicts a bald eagle soaring above the rays of the rising sun, creating one of the most recognizable images in American gold coinage. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above the eagle. Depending on the date, the coin may represent the early No Motto type of 1907 and 1908 or the later design featuring IN GOD WE TRUST, introduced during 1908. Dates, mintmarks, and specific design details vary according to availability.
