American Silver Eagle were first struck and released by the United States Mint in 1986. They were the first bullion coins ever struck by the US Mint. They are some of the most widely-traded and most eagerly sought bullion coins in the world. Part of the reason is that they are backed by the United States Mint and government and are struck in .999 Fine Silver in One Troy Ounce size.
The American Silver Eagle coin has a design that is well-known worldwide. The obverse of the Silver Eagle coin accurately reproduced the Adolph Weinman “Walking Liberty” design. It was first used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollars coins, struck between 1916 and 1947.
Miss Liberty is walking to the left and her right hand is outstretched in friendship. In her left arm are nestled olive branches. Above her is the word “LIBERTY,” in the right field is “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Below is the date the coins were struck.
The reverse depicts John Mercanti’s interpretation of a heraldic eagle design, similar to that used on the reverse of 18th century Draped Bust Siver Dollars. The eagle is the central image, its wings outstretched and pointing upwards. In its beak is a banner with “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” inscribed on it. In one talon is arrows, and in the other is an olive branch. Above the eagle are 13 stars, arranged in a pattern, as well as the phrase, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” On the lower periphery is inscribed with “1 OZ. Fine SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
This particular coin is a 2000-P American Silver Eagle, graded as “PROOF 69, ULTRA CAMEO.” The Proof 69 grade indicates that this coin is only one point away from perfection. The “Ultra Cameo” designation signifies that this coin has a strong contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices. The coin was graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), which is one of the major, third-party, grading services in the world. NGC authenticates, grades, and encapsulates coins in their holders. NGC graded and encapsulated coins are highly desirable in the marketplace.
